Letter from the Superintendent - September 13, 2024

Dear Angleton ISD Families,

I want to talk to you about some concerns we’ve had this week. After the recent incidents in Georgia and Nebraska, we’ve received several reports of threats or rumors about guns and possible school shootings. These reports have come through notes, social media, and conversations. Many students have reported hearing something that sounds like a threat. Sadly, similar issues are happening in schools across the state and the country.

Even with these reports of threats, I want to let you know that our campus principals, assistant principals, AISD police, communication team, and community partners have worked hard to keep our schools safe. I’m happy to say that none of these situations have caused harm to our students or staff. We will continue to make sure our schools are safe, and we will not hold any school events if there’s any danger to our kids.

Some students have made poor choices by saying or writing things about school shootings or posting threatening messages online. While these incidents haven’t caused real harm, they have made people scared and disrupted our schools. We are handling each case according to our school rules, and the police are involved. Students may face serious consequences, including being sent to an alternative school and not being allowed on any AISD campus or at school events.

Here’s the guidance we’ve given to our campus principals:

  • Students who make threats of violence, even if not real, may be sent to an alternative school for at least 30 days. These cases will also be reported to the police, and students may face legal action. During this time, students won’t be allowed on any AISD campus or at school events.

  • Students who spread false rumors about gun violence will also be sent to an alternative school for at least 30 days and might face legal action. They will not be allowed on AISD campuses or at events during this period.

We need your help to keep our schools safe. Parents, please talk to your kids about making good choices and not joking about gun violence or school threats. Encourage them to tell an adult right away if they hear anything that seems unsafe. If you need to report something after school hours, you can:

  • Call AISD Police at 979-997-7220.

  • Use the Anonymous Alerts app or website at this link.

  • Call Crime Stoppers at 800-460-2222.

In the coming weeks, we will provide access to the Smart Social website at Smart Social, which offers helpful tips for families on responsible social media use and other issues students face today.

Angleton is a great community, and Angleton ISD is a fantastic district that I am proud to be a part of. Let’s work together to make the 2024/2025 school year safe and successful for all Wildcats.
