Angleton ISD screens students in all grade levels based on referrals received and permission to test. A gifted and talented (GT) student is one who performs or shows the potential for performing at a remarkably high level of accomplishment when compared to others of the same age, experience, or environment. A GT student also exhibits high-performance capability; possesses an unusual capacity for leadership; or excels in a specific academic field.

Students in the District at all grade levels are identified in compliance with Texas Education Agency guidelines. The referral, assessment, and identification process of gifted and talented students occurs twice a year; during the fall and spring semester. To refer a student for the GT program, please complete the GT Referral Form below. Nominations are accepted at any time from parents/guardians, teachers, administrators, counselors, or community members.

All students who are referred will be considered for assessment and evaluation by district personnel trained in the practice of gifted and talented education. Assessment and evaluation of those students includes data from multiple sources, both qualitative and quantitative. Final selection and identification of students is made by a placement committee comprised of at least three local district educators and GT representatives from each campus, who have received training in the nature and needs of gifted students.

Students who are chosen for further evaluation will be administered several assessments.  The types of assessment used will elicit information regarding the student's reasoning ability and achievement in the core subjects such as reading and math.  These assessments are administered by trained district personnel during the school day.  The results of these assessments will then be used as part of the information reviewed to determine if a student qualifies for GT Program services.

After a student has been administered all of the district assessments required for the GT Program, and other  data has been collected, a placement committee will convene to decide if a student demonstrates the necessary skills and talents for inclusion in the program.  The committee is comprised of district educators who have been trained in gifted and talented education. They will review a matrix which includes multiple data sources. Each student's matrix is identified by a number, as names have been removed in order to eliminate any bias.  Once the committee has reviewed the information, a decision on whether or not to place the student in the program is made. 

In the days following the committee meeting, letters are sent home to parents/guardians of all the students who were considered for the program.  The letters will indicate the committee's decision.  If a student is chosen for placement in the program, additional information about the program he/she has been selected for will also be included with the decision letter.  Parents will then have to give written permission for their student to participate in the GT Program.

Transferring within Angleton ISD

If a GT student transfers from one campus to another, the student’s area(s) for GT identification will automatically follow the student. 

Requesting GT status in Angleton ISD from out-of-district

Placement in the Angleton ISD GT program is not automatic for students identified as GT outside of Angleton ISD. Students must be enrolled in Angleton ISD before the following can be completed:

1. Parents/guardians will begin the GT transfer review by completing the district’s GT Transfer Review.

2. The district’s Advanced Academics team will complete the transfer review process after receiving student records from the parent/guardian and the student's enrollment in Angleton ISD.

3. A transfer recommendation will be provided to the campus decision-making committee to determine if placement in the GT program is appropriate.

4. The committee shall make its determination and notify the parents after receiving the district’s recommendation regarding GT placement and whether additional screening criteria needs to be collected.
